Understanding the stars to enrich your readings
What is Astrology?
Astrology is the study of correspondences between celestial movements and terrestrial events. Unlike astronomy (the science of stars), astrology is a symbolic system: it uses the positions of planets at the moment of your birth to draw a portrait of your personality, talents, challenges, and life cycles.
The natal chart (or birth chart) is a photograph of the sky at the exact moment of your birth. It constitutes your unique astrological fingerprint. Modern astrology does not claim to predict the future literally: it offers a symbolic language to better know yourself and navigate life's cycles.
The 12 Zodiac Signs
The zodiac is divided into 12 signs of 30 degrees each, distributed across four elements and three qualities:
Fire (action, energy): Aries (cardinal), Leo (fixed), Sagittarius (mutable). Earth (concrete, stability): Taurus (fixed), Virgo (mutable), Capricorn (cardinal). Air (intellect, communication): Gemini (mutable), Libra (cardinal), Aquarius (fixed). Water (emotions, intuition): Cancer (cardinal), Scorpio (fixed), Pisces (mutable).
Each sign colors the planet placed in it. Your Sun sign (the most well-known) represents your core identity, but your complete chart contains much more than your Sun: the Moon, Ascendant, and all planets each have their own sign.
The Planets
In astrology, planets represent different facets of the human psyche. Each governs an area of life:
The Sun governs identity, ego, and vitality. The Moon governs emotions, instincts, and the inner world. Mercury governs communication, intellect, and learning. Venus governs love, aesthetics, and values. Mars governs action, energy, and self-assertion.
Jupiter governs expansion, luck, and philosophy. Saturn governs structure, discipline, and life lessons. Uranus governs originality, disruption, and innovation. Neptune governs imagination, spirituality, and intuition. Pluto governs transformation, power, and regeneration.
The 12 Astrological Houses
Houses represent the 12 life domains. They are determined by your time and place of birth (hence the importance of this data for an accurate chart):
House I (Ascendant): self-image, appearance. House II: resources, finances. House III: communication, siblings, short trips. House IV (IC): home, family, roots. House V: creativity, pleasure, children. House VI: daily work, health, routine.
House VII (Descendant): partnerships, marriage. House VIII: transformation, sexuality, inheritances. House IX: travel, philosophy, higher education. House X (Midheaven): career, reputation, ambitions. House XI: friends, groups, ideals. House XII: unconscious, retreat, spirituality.
The Aspects
Aspects are the angles formed between two planets in your natal chart. They indicate how planetary energies interact with each other:
The conjunction (0 degrees) merges the energies of two planets, intensifying them. The sextile (60 degrees) creates gentle harmony and opportunities. The square (90 degrees) generates creative tension, a challenge to overcome. The trine (120 degrees) brings fluidity and natural talents. The opposition (180 degrees) creates polarity between two forces, demanding balance and integration.
Each aspect has an orb (tolerance margin). The more exact the aspect, the more powerful its influence. A natal chart rich in squares is not 'bad': it indicates a dynamic life with many growth drivers.
Reading a Birth Chart
To read a birth chart, start with the 'Big Three': the Sun (core identity), the Moon (emotional world), and the Ascendant (social mask and vitality). These three elements already give a nuanced portrait of the personality.
Next, observe planets in their signs and houses: where is Venus (how do you love?), Mars (how do you act?), Saturn (where are your challenges?). Aspects between planets reveal internal dynamics: a Venus-Jupiter trine favors love and generosity, a Moon-Saturn square may indicate emotional blocks to work through.
Transits â the current positions of planets relative to your natal chart â indicate ongoing cycles. A Jupiter transit over your Sun opens a year of expansion, while a Saturn transit invites maturation and structuring.
Astrology and Tarot: A Dialogue Between Stars and Cards
Astrology and tarot are two complementary symbolic systems. Since the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn tradition, each major arcanum has been associated with a zodiac sign or a planet.
For example, The Emperor (IV) corresponds to Aries, sign of initiative and authority. The Moon (XVIII) corresponds to Pisces, sign of intuition and mystery. The Sun (XIX) is associated with the solar body itself, symbol of vitality and success.
On Zodiia, these correspondences are used in real time: when you draw a card linked to your Sun or Moon sign, the AI detects this resonance and enriches the interpretation. This is the astro-tarot fusion, the heart of the Zodiia experience.
